A new study by the US Food and Drug Administration has demonstrated that a widely celebrated drug to treat Parkinson’s disease has a very strange and unexpected side effect: it leads those who are treated with it to have an urge to play casino games excessively.
The federal drug monitoring agency said that the Parkinson’s Disease drug Mirapex (pramipexole), in a study, was responsible for an extremely high proportion of all urges to play casino games among subjects. Thirty- nine percent to fifty- eight percent of the subjects reports of overwhelming urges to play casino games could be attributed to treatment with Mirapex.
The results of the study add to a body of evidence that suggests that many drugs used to treat Parkinsons lead to problematic compulsions to play casino games. Scientists theorize that this might have to do with the fact that Parkinsons Disease drugs affect levels of dopamine, the pleasure chemical, in the brain.
The results were published in the February issue of the Archives of Neurology journal.
The company that makes the drug said that it would further investigate any connection between Mirapex and the urge to play casino games compulsively.
